Description:


There are currently two (2) full-time, regular hire and two (2) full-time, fixed-term [for up to one (1) year each] Environmental Health Specialist II vacancies in the Environmental Health - Consumer Protection Program. The Environmental Health Specialist II (EHS II) independently performs field inspections in all assigned program categories, assists in the performance of complex inspections, investigates complaints, and may be assigned lead responsibility and training for the activities of one or more staff at the trainee level. This position requires travel between various County and business-related locations and may require evening and weekend work.

Major projects:

  • Performs inspections and enforces the provisions of the State and local health codes pertaining to food, water, housing, and waste disposal services to private and public entities, including food facilities, organized camps, public swimming pools, solid waste facilities, and septic systems.
  • Advises or instructs individuals, businesses, institutions and public officials in the prevention and correction of nuisances and unsanitary conditions.
  • Confers with local officials on sanitation problems.
  • Writes reports and findings of investigations and makes recommendations on requirements for correction or legal action.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Any combination of education and training which would provide the knowledge and abilities to perform as an Environmental Health Specialist II. Typically, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college including 30 semester units of basic science which meets the education requirements of the California State Department of Public Health for registration as an Environmental Health Specialist with the required experience and possession of a valid certificate of registration as an Environmental Health Specialist in the State of California.
  • Certificates and Licenses: Possession of a valid certificate of registration as an Environmental Health Specialist with the California Department of Public Health.
  • Bilingual Testing/Certification: The successful candidate must possess bilingual skills and must demonstrate proficiency in both Spanish and English prior to appointment. A bilingual proficiency exam will be administered to ensure the candidates possess the appropriate skill level to meet the requirements.
